Sunscreen is a complicated and under discussed topic, so lets dive straight in because who actually has the time to read a long blog post? I mean we apparently have the attention span of a goldfish these days with social media and it looks like I currently have ADD and a run on sentence problem.... They say write like you talk, so this is the intro i'm putting out, no apologizes.

How Sunscreen Works (the short version)

Mineral Sunscreens:

These contain active mineral ingredients, such as titanium dioxide, zinc oxide or a mix of both. These work by sitting on top of the skin to deflect and scatter damaging UV rays away from the skin. They are often referred to as physical blockers

Chemical Sunscreens:

These contain carbon-based compounds, such as oxybenzone, octinoxate, octisalate and avobenzone, which create a chemical reaction and work by changing UV rays into heat, then releasing that heat from the skin. They are often referred to as chemical absorbers.

How to Choose a Natural Sunscreen

The type of natural sunscreen we are looking for here should ONLY contain zinc oxide (non-nano) or titanium dioxide (or a mix of both) as the active ingredients. Be careful to avoid ones that have a mix of both physical blockers and chemical absorbers.

Carrot Seed Oil/Essential oil DIY recipes

I am usually an advocate for DIY recipes and love both carrot seed and essential oils. Here's the thing, I don't totally condemn making your own sunscreen but if you choose that route it is very important you do your research and use safe sun practices. The DIY route can be some what unreliable and the risk of sun damage should be taken seriously.

Brands I Love and Use

All brands mentioned are coral reef safe, biodegradable, non GMO, sensitive skin friendly, free from fragrance oil and use non-nano zinc oxide.

First up is a favorite that I think pairs best with our Good JuJu Herbal, Herbal Skin Food Moisturizer. One pump of moisturizer and a tiny dot of face sunscreen under make-up and you are set for the day! This pick is the only one that you will most likely have to order online.

Face Sunscreen:

Beauty By Earth SPF20

Next is body sunscreen. I have tired many body sunscreens that are natural but honestly, inconvenient, thick, expensive and leave a white residue all over the skin. So here are my picks that avoid those common inconveniences. These can be found online through the links provided, Target or Whole Foods.

Body Sunscreens:

Badger Balm Sport

Badger Balm Baby

Lastly, this product is new to the market and I have yet to try it out personally (just ordered some), but it is the first natural zinc sunscreen in spray form. I mean this is basically a dream come true because who doesn't love easy application? Available through the link provided or Amazon, Ulta and Target.

Spray Sunscreen:

BABO Botanicals
