This blog post is for everyone, no matter your budget or DIY status. This is all about easy, effective and affordable. Look, I am not going to lie sometimes switching over to natural skincare can be a bit pricey, so here is a quick guide to cut cost without cutting corners when it comes to having healthy thriving skin. Oh, and all of these one ingredient skin care products are probably already in your house. Win, win.
First up, Olive oil:
Olive oil is so versatile, but I love to use it in my hair. An olive oil hair mask once a week keeps your hair soft and your scalp healthy and clean! Make it your Sunday night ritual and you won't be sorry. Here is what to do.
Pour 1/4 cup (may need more depending on hair length) organic olive oil in a small bowl and pop it in the microwave for 25 seconds, or until slightly warm. This next step is optionally, but if you love essential oils like I do, add in 5-7 drops. I add 5 drops tea tree, to help with any scalp build up and 2 drops lavender to calm my scalp. If you have dull hair Lemongrass essential oil is perfect to add shine and strength. Next wrap a towel around your neck, just in case you get a little messy and pour small amounts straight on to my hair and then massage it into my scalp. Leave on for 30 minutes, hop in the shower and shampoo the olive oil out! So easy right?
So people are crazy about coconut oil, and for good reason! It is packed with skin smoothing/soothing properties, it can basically be used for anything and everything under the sun. I use coconut oil for lots of things but my favorite tricks to help avoid chemical filled expensive products is to sub coconut oil for shaving creme and eye make up remover!
Coconut oil shaving creme is as simple as it sounds. Find a kind of organic 76 degree coconut oil that you like (Trader Joes coconut oil is the best and most affordable) and buy a jar just for your bathroom. When you get ready to shave just simply rub on a small scoop full on to your skin and get to it! It is that simple. You will get a closer shave with coconut oil, you're skin will be deeply moisturized and you will be avoiding shaving cremes which are filled with chemicals, foaming agents, and dyes.
Next up is coconut oil eye make up remover. This is so simple, all you need to do is simply rub a small finger tip sized amount on to your eye lids and wipe away with a cotton ball! By using coconut oil as eye make up remover you will be avoiding harmful chemicals in and around your eyes, helping to strength your eye lashes and effectively moisturizing your upper and lower eye area, which contains some of our most fragile and thin skin.
On the market right now there are some pretty good natural lotions out but more time than not they are also pretty pricey. So if fancy lotion just isn't in your budget right now don't worry, grapeseed oil is here to save the day. All of the oils above are also great for all over body moisture but grapeseed oil is the best and here is why. Grapeseed oil is light with hardly any scent to it and it is also the closest to our skins natural collagen. Here's what to do.
After a shower pour 1/4 cup grapeseed oil in a small bowl and add (or don't add) any essential oil blend you may like. Next just massage into skin and let soak in for 2-3 minutes!
Last tip, buy organic. When buying these one step oils for your skin care routine spend the extra 1-2 dollars and get the good stuff, you won't regret it!
